  • FUSAGx - Assistant chargé de recherches

2001 - 2002 The use of chemical insecticides leads to harmful consequences for the environment and human health. Moreover, the intensive application of chemical insecticides has selected resistant insects. The intensive use of pesticides led to ecotoxicology problems and environment hazards. The current consumer request and awareness of the problems encountered with the conventional chemical pesticides brought out the carrying out of Integrated Pest Management programmes (IPM). The biopesticides such as fungi and the bacteria can be integrated in IPM programmes to achieve Good Agricultural Practices and slow the bioconcentration of chemical pesticides residues. The hope placed in the use of the biopesticides on industrial scale was not yet confirmed. In addition, worldwide market of the microbiological pesticides evolves slowly (only 1% of the phytoprotection product). However, in spite the screening of large quantity of natural molecules, the number of biopesticides remains low.

    Keys responsibilities:
In both BIOVAL and ARC (association for concerted research) projects we carried out a broad screening of bacteria and fungi and sucroesters in order to develop biopesticides and bioemulsifiers or biosurfactants.
Within a group of four Academic Departments, my assistant and I were in charge of the screening of the insecticide activities at the Department of pure and Applied Zoology, Gembloux Agricultural University.
The acute toxicity of 5000 sample from BELDEM, ISP (Public Health Institute), PFIZER and the two Universities (FUSAGx and UCL) assessment was undertaken using Megoura viciae, Callosobruchus maculatus, Tribolium castaneum, Drosophila melanogaster and Tenebrio molitor as model insects. The biocide assay was performed at 10 ppm (as a regular dose for chemical insecticides) and 100 ppm.
